Then there's the enigmatic description of Eldar "pirates" which is synonomous at times with both Dark Eldar and renegade Eldar. The BFG Eldar as presented in the original rulebook are Eldar Pirates who are renegade Eldar, not Dark Eldar. I wonder what sort of units these Eldar would field?

Renegade Eldar are very rare, but not as rare as the Crone Eldar though (for Nev's sake, the Crones are the Eldar who have turned to Chaos, and are said to be the most powerful and malicious Chaos worshippers of all).
Yriel, the Eldar fleet commander who saved Iyanden from Hive Fleet Kraken was made an outcast and was therefore a renegade. He's the only Eldar renegade we have ever heard of. Renegade Eldar are simply the ones who have forsaken all paths of the Eldar in my opinion, just adventurers. So, the Eldar have branched out into the Craftworld Eldar, the Dark Eldar, the Exodites and the Harlequins. There are also the Renegdae Eldar and the Crone Eldar, but these are so rare they are almost a myth.

The Eldar Pirates are those Eldar who follow the Path of the Exile like the Rangers, only they cut all connections with the Craftworlds never to return again and becomes pirates and mercenaries.
Remember the story about the Eldar prince that saved the Iyanden Craftworld. They work for both the Eldar and the DE and even humans for a price.

So, what sort of units would Renegade Eldar field? Guardians? Rangers? Certainly not aspect warriors, right?

Renegade Eldar? I go with guardians as troops, Black Guardians (probably a little better at fighting) as elites, rangers (obviously), the eldar support weapons, as they should still have access to the tech, the tanks as well. No aspects, psykers, or avatar. Basically, all of the guardian units from the codex--guardians, support weapons, tanks, jetbikes....

What about Wraith troops? I can still see them using them, as all Eldar still have their Spirit Stones. They would also have access to the walkers. The reason I'm interested is for tying in BFG Eldar to 40K in a campaign. Most BFG Eldar fleets are "pirates", so I'd like to develop a Renegade Eldar list so that when they fight, I can represent them accurately.
BTW, what are Black Guardians? Sounds cool! Oh, and what sort of HQ would they have? It should be an "Eldar Shadow Prince", or something like that.

In the Ulthwe craftworld list, any mandatory troop choices are filled by the 'Black Guardians'. These guardians are closer to a standing army than normal guardians (Ulthwe has a lower number of aspect warriors, as well). In game terms, any Guardian Defender squad that is a 'Black' choice has a BS4, and any Guardian Storm squad has a WS4. I thought this could represent the renegades being more warlike, or more experienced.
And I don't know if Wraith troops should be allowed. I thought that the seers performed an integral part of the awakening ceremony, and as such, the Renegades would need a seer of some kind to perform this function. Unless you wanted to allow the inclusion of a small number of warlocks to represent minor psychers in the Renegade army. If you allowed that, then the inclusion of wraith troops is more possible. |

Thanks. I think just about any Eldar community would have a warlock or two, but in a renegade troupe, they'd likely be secondary to the Shadow Prince, unlike the Craftworld types, where the psykers rule...

I think it would be best to leave the Wraithlords and Wraithguards out of the Eldar army, as I highly doubt any Spirirtseer would take the path of the Exile.
So, the Renegade army list is beggining to look like this now: HQ Shadow Prince 0-3 Warlocks Elites Ranger sqauds Black Guardian squads (need to think of a more appropriate name for these) Troops Guardian Defender squad Duardian Storm squad Fast Attack Jetbike aquads Vyper squads Heavy Support Support Weapon Battery War Wlaker squad Although the units in a Renegade army use the rules for Craftworld units, remember that they will not look like their Craftworld counterpart. Some extensive converting will be needed to turn the Craftworld Eldar into an Exile. Ren, how's about cutting this thread in two when you first mention Eldar 'pirates'? This thread has gone way off topic.

Is that about where you thought it should be split? I can fix it again if not. And, yeah, it was turning into a games dev thing, so that's where I put it.
(And I'd add the Falcon to the heavy support listing.) |

Good work Hroth, right where it should be cut.
As for the Falcon, yes it should be included, but the other Falcon varients should be restricted to one per army. So, an Eldar renegdae player can have a Falcon, and either a Nightspinner or a Fire Prism.

I would be more inclined to place a restriction on the number of grav tanks allowed, and disallow the superheavies as they'd be too hard to construct. Maybe a 0-3 limit, but you can take any combo of falcon, wave serpent, and fire prism you want. Although I don't see too much trouble allowing any number--it's what the eldar are known for, and the renegades would be just as likely as the craftworlds to utilize that advantage--perhaps moreso, since they don't have the aspects, and fast insertion/withdrawl would be even more critical w/o the heavy support available to a craftworld army.
As an aside, I recently heard that the pirates down in the caribbean sea were so feared that at one point they stormed a Spanish garrison in Venezuela (? not sure about the country--it's been a couple weeks since I heard this) and roughly 50 pirates routed over 2000 soldiers. |

Remember guys, that the Renegade Eldar in BFG have access to even the large Eldar Battlecruisers. I would say that they could have any unit they want, only the infantry would be different. The size and type of a pirate force can be as large and sophisticated as it is successful at being piratical. In other words, a successful pirate that can remain undetected in his pirate base can over time amass many assets, and dominate an entire subsector and maybe even a sector. With all those systems paying tribute, even "pirates" could be a force to reckon with.
Remember also that renegade Eldar are not primitive, they have simply left the path that the Craftworld Eldar follow. They still have access to Eldar technology. So, I would say that the list should be something like this: HQ (0-1)Shadow King (0-1)Shadow Prince Shadow Lord Any of the above can have a Shadow Warrior squad as a retinue + transport option. (0-3) Warlocks Elites Rangers Shadow Warriors (Dire Avengers) + transport option Troops Storm Warriors (Guardian Storm Squad) + transport option Warriors (Guardian Defenders) + transport option Fast Attack Warrior Jetbike Squadron Vyper Squadron Heavy Support Falcon Fire Prism War Walker Squadron Support Weapon battery Transport Wave Serpent As far as converting these, I would use the regular Eldar figures, with a smattering of Dark Eldar spiky bitz here and there, to reflect their "less pure" path. I am starting to like the idea of these more and more...

I can't see any problem with having more anti-grav vehicles.
But the name shadow should be changed in my opinion. The Eldar refer to their dark kin as to having fallen into shadow, so I wouldn't expect the Exiles to be given the same name. Perhaps Outcast would be a better name, or even Exiled? Also, keeping the number of HQ choices down ensures that none of the current choices get neglected. I think the Shadow Lord should be dropped, so that players can chose whether they have a still unexperienced Prince, or a veteran King. HQ Shadow Prince or a Shadow King (can have a Shadow Warrior squad as a retinue + transport option) 0-3 Warlocks Elites Rangers Shadow Warriors (Dire Avengers) + transport option Troops Storm Warriors (Guardian Storm Squad) + transport option Warriors (Guardian Defenders) + transport option Fast Attack Warrior Jetbike Squadron Vyper Squadron Heavy Support Falcon Fire Prism War Walker Squadron Support Weapon battery Transport Wave Serpent Now you're making me think of collecting these bastards. No, I shall remain true to Ulthwe, even if it would be very easy to use my Ulthwe as Renegades. Actually, anyone else noticed how Renegade always goes for renegade armies?

The Eldar ships in BFG were all from a Craftworld that was reported to be hidden in the nearby cyclops culster (IIRC) and weren't in fact renegade ships. Therefore the Ships used for BFG could land aspect warriors if you wished and use the regular Eldar force organisation chart.
The spirit stones are stored within the infinity circuit of a craftworld, so Its unlikely that renegades would have access to any wraith constructs. Plus they would need the services of seers to awaken them, and the path of the Seer is the most rigorous of all, so I dont think you would find any Seers (including Warlocks) anywhere but on Craftworlds. A renegade has chosen the path of the out-cast, so the only options available would be guardians and their variations.
