CYBER-ATTACK: JULY 4, 2002

On July 4, 2002, the forces of Chaos attacked the Dark Millennia website along with 300+ other websites hosted by Center of the Web, a local ISP provider.  As a result, our operations ceased while we worked to restore that which was destroyed or otherwise corrupted by the foul minions of the Dark Gods.  The following is an excerpt from the local newspaper:

STATE COLLEGE - As organizers concerned themselves with tight security for the Central PA 4th Fest celebration, hackers claiming links to an arabic-language television channel and Osama bin Laden broke into the event's website.

Between 8 and 10 AM Thursday, people who pointed their web browsers to 4thFest.org... got unexpected Fourth of July greetings supposedly from al-Jazeera, the popular Arab TV station.   "The hackers took the 4th Fest site down and replaced it with six pages of terrorist propaganda written in English," Terry Beard, an owner of Centre of the Web, which maintains the site, said Friday.

"There was a black page with red text that said something like 'Osama bin Laden and Hitler is back to wish all of you Americans a Happy Fouth of July,'" Beard said.  "As soon as we noticed it, we got rid of it.  They [the hackers] noticed [the change] and put their information back up."

Centre of the Web technicians "went back and forth several times" with the hackers before deciding to put the [4th Fest] site on another server, Beard said, but, "they got that one, too."

The FBI is investigating the electronic break-in Penn State police said.

With two crippled servers, Beard said technicians will have a lot of work ahead of them to rebuild lost information.

"They did some serious damage to our systems," he said.  "Basically, they erased a number of servers' disk drives.  It's going to be a long, slow process for us, unfortunately."

On July 17, 2002, an improved Dark Millennia went live again.  Thanks to all our loyal following who encouraged us during this trying period. May the Web forevermore remain hack-free!
